Using hybrid wind & solar for multiple uses

This EMMA TP45 is installed alongside a 11kW Gaia wind turbine and 6kW of solar PV in Perth, Scotland. These work perfectly as a hybrid system with EMMA. The owner specifically wants to use all power produced by these renewable generators on site.

The Gaia installation is of note because it is an asynchronous wind turbine – meaning that it does not use inverters.

  • During its start-up sequence, the turbine needs to temporarily draw power from the PV panels. To facilitate this, the EMMA TP45 (TP = three phase) monitors the turbine for its start-up sequence.
  • As soon as it sees the turbine’s start-up begin, EMMA immediately makes all power from the solar PV available to the turbine – i.e. EMMA temporarily stops diverting the solar PV’s electricity to hot water and space heating.
  • The only exception to this is if the PV panels are producing more power than the turbine needs to start, in which case EMMA continues to send the surplus electricity to heating.
  • Once the turbine has completed start-up and connected to the grid, EMMA returns to its usual function.

On this site, EMMA monitors each phase and sends any available excess power from the PV system and wind turbine to a 9kW three phase element in a 1000 litre buffer tank on site. When this reaches the desired temperature EMMA sends excess power to a swimming pool heater which also has a 9kW immersion. No energy is wasted in this install. The owner gets to use all the power produced by his generators onsite.

The owner has also set up a Lister engine with a 3kW generator which is also used for heating the pool with the electricity but also heats the buffer tank with a series of heat ex-changers on the exhaust of the engine. The engine is run on waste chip pan oil which has been filtered to the point where it could run a diesel car.
