EMMA Compliance

At Cool Power Products we take compliance testing so seriously that we bring it to the next level. We have set the standard for power diversion equipment by working with multiple UK and Irish DNO's to find and adhere to the correct tests and standards since 2011. As we were the only company to have this type of equipment on the market at that time we have set the bar on what needed to be achieved as there was nothing else on the market to compare against. By working hand in glove with SSE and SPEN we have shown what can be achieved and also demonstrated on synthetic networks built in imperial college by SSE that multiple EMMA units in a cluster can function together without having a power quality impact thus demonstrating that hundreds of thousands of our units can function together on a DNO's network.

With our extensive work and knowledge about complaince standards and levels that must be achieved coupled with our indepth knowledge of power electronics we rapidly reached the conclusion that certain technologies could not be used if power diversion is to be carried out in a compliant way.

Thyristor Control cannot be used due to the harmonics a thyristor generates on the network which can lead to hotspots on the line or on the domestic dwellings cables due to the high current spikes that harmonics generate.

Triac Control also know as Burst Firing cannot be used due to the flicker it creates on the network which is really the visibility of light intensity changing to the naked eye. Flicker standards were created for health risk to humans as the flicker of a lightbulb can lead to in mild cases headaches and in other cases epileptic fits.

Development of special test aparatus and test procedures

The EMMA Export Control system was designed in consultation with several UK DNO’s. In the course of
this it became clear that there is a need for new test methods and procedures to cover issues of
concern to the UK DNO’s that are not addressed by current EU and UK standards. CoolPower Products
has collaborated with the DNO’s on the development and application of specially designed test
apparatus and related test procedures that address these issues of concern. In the course of this it has
been established to the satisfaction of the DNO that our 4G EMMA units meet all the requirements of
the DNO’s relating to these issues of concern.

The result

The EMMA Power Throttle uses High Frequency Pulse Width Modulation to create what we call the Pure Sine Wave Dimmer. This is the only way to achieve compliance for this type of equipment. Other technologies are cheap and cheerful but to be compliant High Frequency PWM technology is the only known method to achieve this.

All EMMA units carry full CE certification and a comprehensive back to base warranty for 36 months from date of delivery of a 4G unit and 12 mobths from date of delivery of the older generation 3G unit. For the warranty to be valid, EMMA must have been installed by a trained installer.

The ELITE is the latest addition to the EMMA product family. While we consider it to be the Elite of power diversion and monitoring it is in fact EMMA's little sibling or as we call it EMMA lite.
